Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a: Which Cable Does Your Office Need

Almost every commercial cabling quote we write gets some version of the same question: Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a — what’s the actual difference, and is it worth paying more for the “better” cable? Here’s a straight answer, based on what we actually install in offices, warehouses, and server rooms across Tennessee and Kentucky.

The short version

  • Cat5e — the older standard. Handles gigabit speeds over short runs but is being phased out for new commercial installs.
  • Cat6 — the current standard for most offices. Supports gigabit reliably and 10-gigabit speeds over shorter distances.
  • Cat6a — the higher-spec option. Supports full 10-gigabit speeds over the full 100-meter run length, with better shielding against interference.

Cat5e: legacy, still functional, rarely the right choice for new work

Cat5e cabling was the standard for years and a huge amount of it is still in service in older buildings. It can handle gigabit speeds, which is enough for basic office use, but it isn’t rated for 10-gigabit performance and the cable itself is thinner and less durable than newer standards. We still service and troubleshoot Cat5e installations, but for new construction or a full office rewire, there’s little reason to install it today — the price difference versus Cat6 is small enough that it isn’t worth the lower ceiling on performance.

Cat6: the standard we install most often

Cat6 is the workhorse of modern commercial cabling. It comfortably handles gigabit speeds over the full standard run length and can support 10-gigabit speeds over shorter distances (typically up to around 55 meters, depending on conditions). For a typical office — desks, printers, access points, phones — Cat6 is usually the right balance of performance and cost, and it’s what we recommend by default unless there’s a specific reason to go further.

Cat6a: for server rooms, high-density buildings, and future-proofing

Cat6a is thicker, better shielded, and rated for full 10-gigabit performance across the entire standard cable run. It costs more per drop and is more work to terminate cleanly because the cable itself is stiffer and larger in diameter. We typically recommend it for:

  • Server rooms and network closets, where cable runs carry heavier, sustained traffic
  • Buildings with a lot of electrical interference (industrial facilities, buildings with heavy machinery nearby)
  • Any business that expects to need 10-gigabit speeds within the next several years and doesn’t want to re-cable to get there

What we actually recommend

For most offices, Cat6 is the right call — it’s cost-effective, handles current and near-future demand, and is straightforward to maintain. We generally reserve Cat6a for server rooms, high-bandwidth environments, or clients who specifically want to build in headroom for the next decade rather than the next five years. Frequently asked questions

Can I mix Cat6 and Cat6a in the same building?

Yes, and it’s common — for example, running Cat6a to a server room while using Cat6 for general office drops. The cabling only needs to match the performance requirement of that specific run.
